Teeth whitening will dramatically improve your smile. When you have a great smile, you become more approachable and more attractive. This naturally benefits both your personal and professional life. While the dental cosmetic procedure does have its benefits, it is still not a permanent solution.

This means that you need to follow a few simple steps to make the results last longer. Vancouver dentists share that apart from maintaining regular dental hygiene, keeping whiter teeth includes being careful about what you eat.

And here are five foods you need to steer clear of to ensure your pearly whites stay white.

  1.  Chocolate
    The sweet and decadent food is beneficial when eaten in moderation; a square of dark chocolate a day has been known to lower blood pressure and reduce risk of heart attack. But it will stain your teeth. Of course, this does not mean you are forever banned from eating the delicious treat. You’ll want to keep away from chocolate bars and drinks, ideally, a week after your teeth whitening procedure—or as prescribed by your Vancouver dentist.
  2.  Berries
    Another superfood, the tangy fruits will leave their bright color on your freshly whitened teeth. You’ll want to stay away from blueberries, raspberries, and cranberries for a time. If, for some reason, you’ve managed to consume berries, don’t panic. Try a glass of water, followed by milk or cheese to neutralize acid and strengthen your teeth
  3. Curry
    Indian cuisine is delightful and flavorful—it is also quite colorful. Take curry, for example, with its yellow palette. Or if you prefer Thai, there is also green or red curry. Whichever type of curry you like, you may have to avoid it after your teeth whitening procedure. The spices, from the yellow turmeric to the red chili powder, will stain your teeth.
  4. Pasta Sauce
    Nothing satisfies hunger like a plate of lasagna or spaghetti Bolognese. But the red sauce will stain your teeth. The tomatoes leave your newly whitened vulnerable to staining. If you’re craving pasta, it’s best to stick with carbonara or pasta with cheese and pepper (cacio e pepe).
  5. Beets
    Beets are an excellent source of phytonutrients which deliver antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support to your system. But their crimson color is powerful enough to leave stains on your newly whitened teeth.


In addition to these food items, you may also want to avoid tea, coffee, red wine, and dark sodas. Acidic foods, such as limes, oranges, and pickles, should also be avoided because they can weaken tooth enamel.
