What is Gum Recession?
Gum recession refers to the loss of the pink gingival tissue that acts like a turtleneck collar around each tooth. As gum tissue diminishes around the tooth’s neck, the root becomes exposed, making it vulnerable to sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. This exposed root is also at a higher risk of developing cavities due to its natural roughness, which attracts plaque, and its soft nature, which is susceptible to rapid decay or acid erosion. Moreover, maintenance and hygiene become more challenging for teeth affected by gum recession, thereby increasing the risk of further recession, bone loss, and ultimately, tooth loss.
What Causes Gum Recession?
- Periodontal disease
- Aggressive tooth brushing
- Tongue ring or lip piercing
- Grinding or clenching habit
- Misaligned teeth
- Destructive bite
Am I a Good Candidate to receive PST®?
Experiencing gum recession doesn’t automatically qualify you as an ideal candidate for the PST®. While the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique has been beneficial for many, there are instances where traditional soft tissue grafting might be the more suitable option. Optimal candidates for PST® typically exhibit minimal to no bone loss and are ready to adhere to a stringent post-operative care regimen. Additionally, successful outcomes depend on the prior management or elimination of inflammation and destructive forces. Dr. Pranata conducts comprehensive evaluations, including photos and x-rays, to ascertain if PST® is the appropriate treatment for you. Schedule your consultation today to discover more!
